MarshallZehr Careers

Senior Software Developer

Description

Senior Software Developer

Who Is MarshallZehr?
MarshallZehr Group Inc. (“MZ”) provides customized construction and development financial solutions for high-performing real estate developers. Since 2008, MarshallZehr has grown to become one of Canada’s most trusted real estate capital partners. We add value beyond capital – our team’s decades of experience help deliver the strategic insight and vision necessary to craft tailored financial solutions, all backed by our industry-recognized mortgage administration services. MarshallZehr has deployed over $4.5B in capital since inception, across more than 500 projects.

The Opportunity

As Senior Software Developer, you will own MarshallZehr’s in-house mortgage administration platform, Navigator. Navigator is one of MarshallZehr’s key strategic advantages. Staff who joined us from larger Canadian lenders tell us Navigator does more for them than the systems they used there – not because those firms lack resources, but because Navigator is built precisely for how MarshallZehr works.

We have been modernizing Navigator’s foundations and integrating it deeply into our document management, finance, and CRM systems (Box, NetSuite, and HubSpot). In recent months we rewrote our mortgage valuation algorithm for an 11x speed-up, cut a three-day monthly invoice process to half an hour, and halved our build times.

We’ve also been shipping AI-enabled features: a document audit that took our staff three hours now runs in 10 minutes on Box AI, and we have the evals to show it is just as effective. Our goal is a funding process that moves seamlessly between people and AI across dozens of staff, hundreds of documents, and millions of dollars.

You will be responsible for the full development lifecycle, working with staff to identify new opportunities to improve Navigator, designing and architecting solutions, writing the code, reviewing and verifying changes, and shipping into production. This means collaborating with stakeholders throughout MarshallZehr, leading technical design sessions, mentoring your fellow developer, and contributing to our roadmap.

We believe that AI is fundamentally changing how software is built. The traditional division between product, engineering, and QA is giving way to builders who can take ideas from concept to production in days rather than months. We are not there yet; closing that gap is a large part of this job. You put the outcome first and use whatever gets you there: working with stakeholders to understand the problem, prototypes to design a great user experience, agentic tools to build and verify your code, and your strong engineering principles to ensure the platform remains stable, maintainable, and secure.

You will report to MarshallZehr’s CTO and work alongside one other developer. This is a permanent, full-time, hands-on role: you will write code every day.

Navigator is built on .NET 10, Angular 21, and SQL Server. It runs on AWS ECS, with the Grafana Cloud LGTM stack giving us insight into every facet of Navigator’s operations. We use GitLab for project planning, source code management, and CI/CD.

The Role

As Senior Software Developer, you will:
  • Develop software in .NET, Angular, and other languages/frameworks.
  • Lead projects end-to-end to make Navigator a better, more capable tool for our staff.
  • Interview staff and other stakeholders to prototype and design improvements tailored to how MarshallZehr works, so our team can work more efficiently and accurately.
  • Incorporate industry best practices into technical designs and Navigator’s overall architecture to ensure its reliability and security, and to provide a great developer experience.
  • Write and maintain automated tests to ensure that we can confidently ship our changes without regressions.
  • Use a mix of automated and manual code review to ensure that changes made by others have the right outcome and solve the business problem (they’ll do the same for you).
  • Use AI throughout your development process to better specify, better develop, and better test your changes, and contribute back to our shared skills and context to make the whole team better.
  • Work closely with MarshallZehr’s CTO to continuously evolve our AI-assisted development lifecycle as new tools, techniques, and models become available.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to deliver our development roadmap, ensuring that we build the right features in the right order.
  • Prioritize and tackle technical debt to maximize the stability, extensibility, and functionality of Navigator without stalling delivery.

What Are We Looking For?

  • Strong back-end and front-end experience in a comparable modern stack. You do not need to arrive fluent in our .NET/Angular/SQL Server stack, but you do need to be productive in it quickly.
  • Computer Science, Engineering, or related degree/diploma is preferred; we will also consider candidates with equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, including at least two at a senior level.
  • Experience across every stage of the development lifecycle, not just writing code.
  • Hands-on experience using an agentic coding tool (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Kiro) on an existing codebase, with enough mileage to know where it performs well, where it does not, and which techniques get good results.
  • Strong code review skills – you find the defects that tests and other reviewers miss, and you give feedback people can act on.
  • A track record of making the developers around you better.
  • Experience improving software architecture for scalability, testability, and maintainability.
  • Experience with CI/CD systems and how to use them to accelerate development.
  • Experience with Docker and/or a managed container service such as AWS ECS.
  • Working knowledge of running web services in production – hosting, monitoring, logging, configuring servers, cloud services.
  • Working knowledge of user experience – empathy for users and an ability to turn requirements into working software.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while navigating ambiguity.
  • Ownership of your own success – you dive in and solve problems without hesitation, and don’t need constant direction.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral – you know how to advocate for your ideas.
  • An appetite for critique – you view code reviews, retrospectives, and feedback both as a great learning opportunity and a way to share your knowledge with others.
